Dermatology > Hives

The key to finding relief from your hives is learning how to manage them yourself on a daily basis - and working with your doctor to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.  Whether your hives only bother you at certain times of the year or are a constant nuisance, here are the most common ways to relieve your symptoms:

  • Avoid the cause of your hives (if you know it)

  • Don't use hot water (take frequent showers or baths in lukewarm water only)

  • Use gentle soap when bathing

  • Apply calamine lotion to relieve your itching

  • Try to work and sleep in a cool room

  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothes

Doctor-Recommended treatment:

  • Consult your dermatologist about controlling your symptoms
(particularly if you have chronic hives and do not know the cause).

  • Pay close attention to your symptoms, (keep track of how, where and
when they flare up to help your doctor properly diagnose and treat you).

  • Develop a treatment plan with your doctor.

  • Discuss your treatment plan with your doctor to ensure that it fits into
    your lifestyle.
