Breast reduction should be considered by women with too-large, uncomfortable breasts, bra strap indentations on shoulders, back and neck pain, ill-fitting clothes, irritated skin, and general discomfort are an unfortunate reality. For women who desire lighter, firmer, more proportionate, breasts, breast reduction is an excellent option.

During breast reduction cosmetic surgery, an incision is made under the breast, under the arm, or around the nipple, and excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin is removed. Breast reduction can also be performed to reduce the size of the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple). Breast tissue may be reshaped to ensure that the breasts are in proportion with the woman’s body. Breasts typically heal within several weeks after breast reduction cosmetic surgery, and results are considered permanent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is this surgery?

  • Surgery times vary for each patient, thought typically this procedure lasts 2-3 hours. It is usually done as an outpatient procedure and patients are able to go home on the same day.

Where will my incisions be located?

  • There is typically a circular incision around the areola, along with a vertical incision that goes from the bottom of the areola to the fold underneath the breast. There vertical incision and surrounding skin located underneath the breast will appear “bunched” right after surgery but will smooth out over time.

What dressings should I expect to have after surgery?

  • The incisions will be covered with small tape-like dressing called steri-strips. These stay on the incisions for several days and eventually come off on their own. Over this, there may be small pieces of gauze and tape over the incisions which may be removed 1-2 days after surgery. The areas should remain covered if they continue to drain fluid. You will be placed in a surgical bra or ace wrap after surgery.

What should I expect as far as recovery time?

  • Patients are usually able to return to light activity/work after 1 week. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity/exercise should be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks after surgery.

How long should I expect to have swelling?

  • Although most swelling resolves over the first month after surgery, swelling may persist anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months. Bruising from the procedure should be expected though it usually resolves within the first month after surgery.

Will I need to have sutures (stitches) removed after surgery?

  • There are typically no incisional sutures that need to be removed. All sutures used are dissolvable or underneath the skin.
