Rosacea Treatments Austin

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a long lasting, non-scarring skin condition of the face that is often diagnosed as adult acne. It varies in severity and does not always worsen with time. Typically, you will experience inappropriate flushing that is not usually associated with sweating and/or persistent facial redness. It is common to have broken blood vessels (telangiectasias) on your cheeks. You may also experience bouts of inflammation that cause red papules (small bumps) or pustules.

What Causes Rosacea?

The cause is poorly understood. Flushing is an essential part of the condition, so experts believe that there is a vascular cause or that blood vessels are a significant component to the cause.

What Aggravates Rosacea?

  • Exposure to weather – sun, cold, wind
  • Hot food, hot drinks, and alcohol
  • Medications (you should avoid drugs that expand your blood vessels, and topical steroids)
  • Cosmetics (you should avoid greasy, drying, or perfumed products)

Rosacea Laser Treatment

Photofacials are one of the newest techniques for facial rejuvenation. Photofacials utilize light to treat different aspects of the skin. Photofacials can improve broken blood vessels, ruddiness, and rosacea. Additionally discolorations of the skin such as sun spots and melasma can be effectively treated. One of the most exciting aspects of this treatment is that it can be used as a “subsurface resurfacing” technique. New collagen in the skin is generated with repeat treatments. Fine lines, large pores and scars can be improved. For some, even moderate wrinkles will soften.

The advantage to photofacials are that there is no “down-time.” The skin will be slightly pink when you leave, which is easily covered with makeup. The pinkness will resolve over several hours. There is a small risk of a scab or a bruise resulting from the treatment, but this should resolve over 7-10 days.

After just one or two treatments, you will notice an even tone to your skin, less pigmentation and a smoother look and feel. Sunspots will start to fade and pores will become less apparent. Fine lines and wrinkles will soften over time. These improvements continue with each treatment. Patient with acne and rosacea will also see a reduction in facial redness as a result of each treatment.
